With its origins dating back to the 18th century, the University of Porto is the largest Portuguese teaching and investigation institute, be this in number of students, study units or volume of scientific production.

Daily, a student community of more than 30 thousand members, broaden their knowledge horizons in 14 faculties, one business school and nearly 70 scientific investigation structures..

The fields of study at the students disposal at U.Porto is vast, diverse and projected for the future. More than 700 study programmes available – 35 degree, 153 master, 85 doctoral and 392 continuous study courses – cover varied areas of knowledge such as life and health sciences, engineering, technological innovation, human, social and cultural studies and the arts.

The University of Porto is the most sought Portuguese public higher education institution nationally and, year after year, it sees the number of its foreign students grow too. These are symptoms of the achieved reputation of the institution. To maintain the teaching quality, U.Porto has a qualified and specialized body of 2366 (1920,8 ETI) full time teachers, 76% of which are PhD’s. The U.Porto human resources still account for 1654 (1648,1 ETI) technical and administrative workers, responsible for the functioning of the institution.

More than by quantity, the University of Porto distinguishes itself through quality. It is the highest placed Portuguese institution in most of the higher education and scientific investigation rankings, having been positioned in 2010 amongst the 100 top European universities. Furthermore, U.Porto was responsible for 22.5% of all the national scientific production.
